Description
In 1945 Lionel introduced the new Postwar freight truck with the now famous knuckle coupler. The truck went through several iterations as Lionel changed the wheels, axles, and tried to figure out how best to incorporate the sliding shoe for activating the uncoupling feature. By 1946 Lionel arrived at the totally enclosed housing that replaced the "flying shoe" used in 1945.This tender was made in early 1946 with two leftover 1945 trucks, and both are different! The front truck has thick axles with machined ends, and the coupler truck has the axles with the standard diameter still used today. Probably very few 1946 tenders were made this way, so this is an unusual and scarce piece.
The tender shell has the matte black paint and white heat stamped lettering that are correct for 1946 as well as the railing on the back deck that was eliminated in later years. The wires from the pickup trucks appear to be original, unusual for tenders this old. The metal whistle has been freshly lubed and sounds great.
